While the P4 language and underlying PISA model provide an excellent way to define the packet processing behavior of network devices, most programmable devices still typically have significant non-programmable pieces. There has been significant work towards extending P4 programmability further.
Steve Ibanez and Gordon Brebner will present their work on defining a new P4 programmable element, a programmable traffic manager. Traffic management is a broad term encompassing functionality such as packet scheduling, shaping, policing, queueing, buffering, and replication. The design of this new programmable element is based on the recently proposed Push-In-First-Out (PIFO) queue model .
